abstract = "Optical remote sensing are of restricted use over highly cloudy
areas when they are applied in Amazon, especially during rainy
season. Synthetic Aperture Radar imagery has been an alternative,
since data acquisition is independent of weather conditions. Thus,
the scientific community has been developing and testing
techniques for processing and classification of such imagery in
order to enhance information extraction. In this context, this
paper aims to compare the techniques of supervised classification
of polarimetric Maxver-ICM and SVM Radial Basis Function (RBF) in
the radar image ALOS PALSAR (Amplitude), using statistical
analysis, overall accuracy, Kappa and Tau index highlighting the
advantages and disadvantages of operational applications. It was
concluded that the Maxver-ICM polarimetric showed better results
in classification than the SVM, except for the class Forest. Also
the ICM procedure uses de context to improve final classification,
results which is not available for SVM. It is noteworthy that the
main advantage of Maxver-ICM polarimetric is the processing time
and the gratuity.",
